Sweet Constructions

A Wedding with Cookies!

About a month into our regular Friday outings with the cookie cart someone stopped by and asked whether we could provide cookies for her wedding in November, where she planned to have a dessert table with cupcakes and cookies. What a wonderful idea!

I love the idea of having a table (or three tables, in this case) with many different, smaller treats for guests -- a perfect way to add a variety of flavors and textures and to cater to a wide range of tastes. Having a separate table for cookies in addition to the cake is a tradition that started in Pennsylvania and Ohio, where family members usually bake a bountiful array of special cookies and family favorites. The guests get to graze on the treats at the wedding, and often take some home as well as wedding favors. For a couple of perspectives on this tradition, take a look at the following stories: "Cookies--the New Cake", "What's a Wedding Without Cookies?", "Home Cooking: The Family Dessert Buffet".

On our way back from setting up the cookie platters at the Stanford Faculty Club on Saturday, Mindi and I talked about the cookie table, and realized that this could also be a great, budget-conscious way to offer guests dessert at a wedding. A smaller cake or no cake at all plus an array of cupcakes, cookies and other treats would in most cases still cost less than a large, traditional wedding cake for the same number of guests. And, of course, having family members or friends contribute some of the cookie varieties could decrease the cost even further.

This Week in Cookies

Whew. It feels like we've been working long hours almost continuously since early summer, sometimes with amazing weeks -- great sales at the cookie cart, new friends and business contacts, successful experiments with new cookie and cupcake flavors -- and sometimes with very little noticeable progress.

But last Friday was one of our best days so far, with three(!) cafes agreeing to try out our cookies this week. (Thank you, thank you, Alona for all your determination and persistence in visiting cafe after cafe). We are so incredibly excited!

Our Cookies at Spencer on the Go!

Note Sweet Constructions at the bottom of Spencer On-the-Go's menu board! Yes, those are our cookies listed at the bottom of the menu board at Spencer On-the-Go! Our friend Laurent Katgely opened his mobile French bistro (formerly an old taco truck) on Friday night, and he's selling our cookies.

And look our Checkerboard, Sandwich, Chocolate Crackle and Mocha cookies made it into photos on Yelp. How cool is that? Mindi and I have been pretty excited about this whole thing...from a mad rush to get hundreds of cookies made and delivered on time, to seeing the truck in action, and now photos.

If you're in San Francisco, stop by Folsom and 7th to visit Spencer on the Go in the Henry's Oil Change Parking lot across from the Terroir wine bar. The truck will be there tonight starting at 6pm, and will be there from now on every Thursday, Friday, and Saturday evening. It's definitely worth a trip...the food's delicious!!

Building a Cookie Business

image of a stack of sweet constructions cookies
Only a little more than a week to go until I'm working full time on our cookie business - yikes! At this point, I'm alternating between complete stress (how on earth am I going to get everything packed and moved? are we really going to be able to grow enough for this to be my only source of income?) and excitement. I've been waking up in the middle of the night with one idea or another about our packaging, our marketing materials, sales prospects, and other miscellaneous bits. I think this is a good sign, alhough not the best way to be bright and cheery in the morning!
